The Future of Inequality│Abhijit Banerjee(MIT, Professor of Economics)
World Knowledge Forum · Abhijit Banerjee (MIT, speaker); Yun Hang (moderator); Professor Hong (Korean discussant); audience members (Q&A).
Abhijit Banerjee reviews recent historical patterns of income and wealth inequality, arguing that inequality rose sharply after about 1980 in many large economies and that policy choices (taxes, corporate governance, trade) and technological change (AI) help explain the rise. He warns that AI and concentrated wealth threaten middle-class jobs, social mobility and political stability, and proposes tax changes, wealth taxation, closing tax havens, retraining and less-stigmatizing redistribution.
